Nobody wakes up hoping they need a dental crown. It usually comes after a moment of realization: a tooth that’s been bothering you for a while, a bite that feels off, or maybe that one tooth that cracked on something you probably shouldn’t have been chewing.
Here’s the good news: a dental crown isn’t something to dread. In fact, it’s one of the most reliable, long-lasting ways to save a tooth and get you back to eating, smiling, and living without worry.
At Reliance Dental, we’ve been placing crowns for Edmonton patients for over 14 years. And we’ve learned that the fear usually comes from not knowing what to expect. So let’s walk through it together.

What Actually Is a Crown?
Think of a crown like a custom-made helmet for your tooth. It’s a hollow, tooth-shaped cap that fits snugly over a damaged tooth, covering it completely from the gumline up. Once it’s on, it acts like a normal tooth.
A crown is usually the answer when a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling. That might be because of:
- A large cavity that’s taken out too much of the natural tooth
- A tooth that’s chipped or fractured
- A tooth that just had a root canal and needs protection
- An old, worn-down filling that’s failing
Basically, if a tooth is still there but needs serious reinforcement, a crown is often the most durable, long-term solution.
The Reliance Dental Approach: No Surprises
We know that words like “crown” or “root canal” can make people nervous. That’s why our team takes things slow. We explain every step, answer your questions honestly, and here’s the part our patients appreciate: we never upsell.
If a crown is genuinely the best option to save your tooth and protect your oral health, we’ll tell you why. If a filling or another option would work just as well, we’ll tell you that too. Our job is to give you the information you need to make a decision you feel good about.
The Process: Simpler Than You Think
Getting a crown usually takes two visits.
We start by numbing the area so you’re comfortable. Then we gently reshape the tooth to make room for the crown. We take precise digital impressions, no goopy, gag-inducing material, and send those to our lab. A temporary crown goes on so you can go about your day normally while your permanent crown is being custom-made.
About two weeks later, you come back. We remove the temporary, check that your permanent crown fits perfectly, and then bond it into place. We’ll adjust it to make sure your bite feels natural. And that’s it.
What About How It Looks?
We hear this one a lot: “I don’t want a big, obvious metal cap on my tooth.”
Fair enough. Modern crowns are made from materials that blend in beautifully with your natural teeth. For front teeth, we typically use porcelain that matches the color and translucency of your other teeth. For back teeth that handle heavy chewing, we often recommend stronger materials like zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal: strong, but still natural-looking.
Why It’s Worth Doing
A damaged tooth rarely gets better on its own. Putting off a crown when one is needed can lead to the tooth breaking further, developing an infection, or eventually needing extraction. And as we always tell our patients, keeping your natural teeth is almost always better than replacing them.
