Can I Go to the Dentist While Pregnant? What Expecting Moms Need to Know

If you’re expecting, you’ve probably got a long list of questions running through your head. Is this food safe? Can I still exercise? And maybe one you haven’t thought about yet: can I go to the dentist while pregnant? The short answer is yes. Not only is it safe, but it’s also actually important.

Here’s what you need to know about dental care during pregnancy, and why keeping up with your oral health is one of the best things you can do for both you and your baby.

Why Dental Care During Pregnancy Matters

Pregnancy brings many changes to your body, and your mouth is no exception.

  • Shifting hormone levels can make your gums more sensitive, swollen, and likely to bleed. This is called pregnancy gingivitis, and it affects a lot of expecting moms. If left untreated, it can progress into more serious gum disease.
  • Morning sickness can also be a factor. If you’re dealing with nausea and vomiting, the stomach acid that comes up can wear away at your tooth enamel over time. That makes your teeth more vulnerable to cavities.
  • Gum disease has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. That’s why staying on top of your dental health during pregnancy isn’t just about your smile; it’s about your baby’s health too.

Is It Safe to Get Dental Work Done?

Yes. Routine dental care like cleanings, exams, and even fillings is considered safe during pregnancy. In fact, the Canadian Dental Association encourages it.

The best time to schedule non-urgent dental work is during your second trimester. By then, morning sickness has usually eased up, and you’re still comfortable enough to sit in a dental chair for a little while. The third trimester can be uncomfortable for longer appointments, so we try to avoid scheduling bigger treatments then.

If you’re in your first trimester, don’t worry; we can still see you for a cleaning and checkup. And if you have a dental emergency at any point, we’ll treat it right away. Leaving a dental infection untreated is far riskier than treating it.

What About X-Rays and Numbing?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and it’s a fair question. Dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation, and we take extra precautions for pregnant patients. We use a lead apron and thyroid collar to shield you and your baby. We only take X-rays when they’re truly needed, not routinely.

As for numbing, local anesthetic is considered safe during pregnancy. If you need a filling or a root canal, we can numb the area so you’re comfortable. Just let us know you’re pregnant, and we’ll adjust our approach to keep you and your baby safe.

Tips for Keeping Your Mouth Healthy While Pregnant

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to keep gums healthy.
  • After morning sickness, rinse with water instead of brushing right away. Brushing immediately can scrub acid into your enamel. Wait about 30 minutes.
  • Stay hydrated to help with dry mouth.
  • Keep up with regular cleanings to stay ahead of gum issues.
